about

This revolutionary folk song song tells of an 1857 peasant uprising in the western Georgian province of Samegrelo. Led by Utu Mivaka, a blacksmith, 3,000 people rose up against the local ruling family, the Dadianis, and against exploitation under Czarist serfdom. While the uprising was ultimately crushed, it marked the beginning of a series of uprisings across the Russian Empire that to led to eventual abolition of serfdom in Georgia and the rest of the Russian Empire in the 1870s.
